Dóchas is an Irish word that means hope, especially hope for the future. Dóchas is pronounced doe-hass and it conjures up a sense of trust, optimism, faith and confidence. Because of this, dóchas is frequently used in the titles of various Irish organizations and institutions.
Dóchas is an ideal word for me to pick as my new Irish word in honor of St. Patrick’s Day (a week late, but it still totally counts!) since it all about bringing faith to the future and that is exactly how I’m feeling after my birthday! In so many ways this year so far has been all about cultivating dóchas and it’s still going strong!
The field of life spreads beyond sight / it’s borders blurred at horizon’s height. / It’s lushness ripples, bends and bows / It’s pleasures and turmoil have yet to unfold / Yet promise lies there so rich to behold. / With open arms and mind apiece I long to see just what it holds…This is a dóchas future bold. ~ Ella
I’m delighted that dóchas will be joining aoibhneas, draiocht, and muirnigh in my Word Nerd collection!
Namaste ~ Ella
