Hypnagogic means of, relating to, or occurring in the period of drowsiness immediately preceding sleep. Hypnagogic derives from the Greek root hypn- (sleep) and -agōgos (inducing). Hypnagogic is also borrowed from the French hypnagogique.
Hypnagogic or a hypnagogic state is a state of half-sleep, that lull between consciousness and unconsciousness where the mind is half-dreaming and half-awake. Hallucinations, lucid dreaming and sleep paralysis can occur when one is in a hypnagogic state. Many a scientist has attributed alien abduction stories to a state of hypnagogia.
Hypnagogic, that place that lies between. The space of not quite dreaming, not quite waking. It’s a lull the soul yearns for since it is there it touches upon the essence of true home…scary, bizarre, real or not…it’s for you to decide…
Hypnagogic is a state I am all too familiar with, but in a way it’s a place I find comfort in. I like the weird, otherworldly quality it has. That sweet spot right before I drop off completely, where I feel soft, comfortable, and ready to release my consciousness for a bit. I am utterly in love with the word and state of hypnagogia. How about you?
