Word Nerd: Valentine

Word Nerd Header Apr 2016 via LaWhimsyvalentine definition Word Nerd via LaWhimsyA Valentine is a card or message, usually amatory or sentimental but sometimes satirical or comical, or a token or gift sent by one person to another on Valentine’s Day. The word Valentine (and holiday) originate from Saint Valentine and it originated as defined above sometime in the 15th century.

Now I know that using valentine is a bit of an obvious choice for the day and all, however, I am always up for words and holidays that got their names from the names of others and Valentine’s Day and the love tokens, or valentines, are certainly of that ilk! I do like how, earlier on, a great many valentines were given anonymously. Think of the time given to creating the perfect valentine for that certain someone or the time spent trying to figure out who may have sent you the token you received!

Despite the overblown notion that one must absolutely be coupled up to enjoy and indulge in Valetnine’s Day, I say it’s truly a holiday for everyone. Love is love is love is love. No matter the reason, the season, the day. So celebrate, show compassion to, and take great delight in you ~ a holiday all about love just feels so right when you do!

Namaste ~ Ella
