Fika (pronounced fee-ka) is both a Swedish verb and noun that roughly means to drink coffee or tea, usually accompanied by something sweet to eat. the Swedish concept of a coffee break. Fika is much more than that, however, since in Swedish culture Fika is truly a state of mind that involves slowing down, connecting with others, and thoroughly enjoying the good things life has to offer.
Fika is like hygge in that both concepts are being incorporated into the American lexicon as ideals to live up to. Like hygge, fika is about slowing down and disconnecting from a world where we always seem to be “ON” and constantly going. To be able to take a daily break and connect one on one with others, or even one’s self, is a beautiful and wonderful thing and that is what fika is all about.
Balance is key to everyday happiness and what better way to bring that about then with a bit of fika?
Fika has been a concept I’ve been aware of since I became aware of hygge, I just hadn’t felt called to share it here until now. I feel like perhaps 2019 is the year to begin practicing fika with earnest delight – what do you think?
