Happiness has many keys, many paths, many truths, and many interpretations. That said, one of the fundamental truths lies in this valuable quote.
“The key to happiness is letting each situation be what it is instead of what you think it should be.”
Pause for a minute and really let those words sink in. How often would you say that you allow each situation you are in be exactly what it is instead of what you presume or think it should be? Be honest. I bet it’s not very often, if at all. I know that’s the case for me. When I stopped and actually started to pay attention, I realized that I was making each situation into something it wasn’t, based solely on my presumptions. It’s been a huge eye-opener.
This wisdom has the potential to be life-altering. I mean, realizing that I was coasting through my life, allowing preconceived notions and thoughts to dictate situations was shocking. Talk about thudding back to earth with a rather rude awaking! And yet, at the same time it has been such a blessing. Since I started becoming more mindful and taking each moment, each situation for what it is and not what I’m putting on it or thinking it should be, I’ve felt lighter, less stressed.
Now, it hasn’t been easy since it’s meant breaking old, worn-in habits and ways of thinking and perceiving, but the more I do it, the more aware and mindful I practice being, the better I get at it. I swear I can almost feel new pathways being formed in my brain (gotta keep those little gray cells working, no?). Realizing that I’ve been making some situations more difficult, or more stressful, or more whatever, simply because I presumed and thought they would or should or could be has been mind-boggling. As I notice myself reacting with this old habit, I pause and actually asses the situation at hand and the astonishing thing is, usually it’s none of those things!
Try it yourself and see if you notice that instead of allowing situations to be what they are, you are projecting what you think the situation is to be your reality. By noticing and then correcting this particular habit or train of thought, you will have unlocked one of the major keys of happiness, contentment, and ultimately a life that holds less stress and more joy. And who doesn’t want that?!
