Eccentric is defined as deviating from the recognized or customary character or practice. Eccentric originally derived from the Greek words ex (out of) and kentron (center). The original meaning of eccentric in English meant “out of center” and since around the early 1600’s eccentric has been used to describe one who is figuratively off-center.
Eccentric can also be described as peculiar, whacky, quirky or any number of other delightful synonyms that describe people, behaviors and things as off-kilter from a perceived norm. I actually have been described as eccentric or as having many an eccentricity, but I take that with a certain amount of pride, I mean I named this very blog LaWhimsy for a reason!
I, myself, am strange and unusual and rather eccentric…just a little play on a favorite quote of mine from a favorite movie, which has nothing to do with the very bright image, tee-hee!!
Eccentric, well eccentricity really, is easily in my top thirty favorite words. What do you think of when you hear or read the word eccentric?
