Borborygmi are the rumbling, gurgling sounds caused by gas moving through the intestines. Borborygmi is the plural form of borborygmus and it is pronounced BOR-boh-RIG-mee. Borborygmi originates from the Greek borborygmos, which was derived from borboryzein (to have a rumbling in the bowels).
While there is nothing exactly fun about being borborygmic (suffering from borborygmi), I think it’s fantastic to have a word that actually describes those deep stomach growlings. While the definition is about the gas that moves through the intestines, I often experience a borborygmus caused by a need to eat and I suppose that it could be air moving through a digestive tract that wants to be filled with food! Borborygmi makes me laugh, both saying the word and feeling (and hearing!) it as it happens.
This belly of mine is familiar with borborygmi grumblings and rumblings, lol!
Borborygmi is a fun word, so long as it’s not causing pain or due to a severe medical issue. I also find borborygmi to be a delightful reminder of just how weird and wonderfully complex our bodies are!
