Munificence is the quality or action of being lavishly generous. Munificence derives from the Latin term munificentia (bountifulness), which has the stem munificus (which literally means present-making). You can break it down even further to the parts munus (gift or service) and facere (to do). Munificence is bountifulness, liberality, generosity in one glorious word!
While munificence is a year-round word and quality, there is something in the air at this festive time of year that tends to bring out the munificence in force. While there are certainly scrooges about, I find that munificence rates much higher on my radar. Being munificent while giving to others, especially with time, care and love is an important and wonderful way to be even if it can get a bit treacly. It’s equally important to be munificent with yourself too, by providing for your own needs, desires and wants.
