Word Nerd: Mantra

Word Nerd Header Apr 2016 via LaWhimsymantra definition Word Nerd via LaWhimsyMantra is a word or formula chanted or sung as an incantation or prayer. Mantra is a Sanskrit word from manyate (he thinks) and it first started being used around 1795.

A mantra or mantram in Sanskrit, Pali and other languages is a group of words in sacred utterance, a numinous sound, or a syllable or word believed by practitioners to have religious, magical or spiritual powers. A mantra is a sacred, spiritual, personal practice that should be respected. Scholars believe that the use of mantras dates back to before 1000 bc. Mantra actually has no generally accepted definition and the thoughts on it are vast and fascinating!

I been using mantras in my spiritual practice for a while now and recently I began to focus on just how sacred mantras truly are. It’s why I decided that I needed to change to Affirmation Mondays since they were never meant to be anything divine or hallowed. Mantras originated with many different cultures and I do not want to cheapen or usurp their sacredness. Mantras deserve respect as do the cultures and people they belong to. What do you think of mantras?
