Word Nerd: Iterum

Word Nerd Header Apr 2016 via LaWhimsyiterum definition Word Nerd via LaWhimsyIterum means again, anew, a second time. Iterum is a Latin word that derives from the Proto-Indo-European *i-tero-‎, from the pronominal root *i-‎, whence is‎.

It’s a new day, a new year, a new president with a new term, a fresh start all around and Iterum felt like an ideal word despite it being Latin and having no real practical vocabulary day-to-day application. Each comes iterum in turn in a steady rhythm. Yes, each day, each minute is iterum. Each breath we take is iterum with it’s beat of once more and each turn of the seasonal cycles is iterum with their fresh chances given in a repeating pattern.

Iterum was actually meant to be used last week as the first Word Nerd, but alas technical difficulties (i.e. my computer had a freak-out) made it a rather ideal word for this week instead. Latin words are always so fascinating to me since the language is both familiar (what with so many words being formed from Latin bases) and foreign to me. Iterum is no different, and though I think it’s a fantastic word I find using it to be so clunky. How about you? Happy New Year and here’s to it evolving in an uplifting way for us all!!!

  2. Hi Ella, what a lovely word. I hope I get to write a few lines about it someday. Yes I agree Latin words and expressions are amazing, they get us to the point. So far, i have only used *Alea Jacta es* in my poetry.

    Your website is pure bliss!

    Cheers
    Manisha 🙂
