Querencia means home, a favorite spot. Querencia can also mean the part of a bullring where the bull takes its stand, however I much prefer the metaphysical concept. Querencia derives from the Spanish verb querer (to desire) which derives from the Latin quaerere (seek, gain, obtain). Combined these provide the base for the concept of querencia, which is a place where one feels safe, at home and where they can draw there strength from.
Querencia is an ideal word for this year since I feel so at home within myself again. When I discovered the word and idea of querencia it struck me as such a desirable feeling, one that I longed for and now I am achieving once more. To find querencia within your own bones, your own soul, means that no matter where you are querencia will be a part of it in one way or another. Of course there is something to be said for external querencia, the kind that for me can be found in a bookstore or library or out in Nature absorbing all it’s grandeur and glory.
