Ataraxia (pronounced at-uh-rak-see-uh) is a state of freedom from emotional disturbance and anxiety. Ataraxia derives from the Greek ataraktos (undisturbed) and in Greek ἀταραξία is generally translated as imperturbability or tranquillity.
Ataraxia is a Greek philosophical term that describes a sort of steady, clear-minded serenity that is characterized by an ongoing freedom from stress and anxiety. In other words, ataraxia is something everyone wants to be feeling, especially in a world that feels like it’s constantly going in a whirlwind of news, noise, chaos, etc. Ataraxia is a state of being that is the exact opposite of what so many consider to be their “norm”. Ataraxia could be described as peaceful, calm, grounded, centered, halcyon, quiet, restful, easygoing…
The soul in a state of ataraxia is a soul in it’s truest form. We were not made to always be rushing, to always be “on”, we were made for being quiet, for being easy, for being calm and joyfully serene… ~ Ella
Ataraxia is something I have been making more time for in my life. I have been disconnecting from the outside and reconnecting to what lies inside myself and in doing so I have been cultivating my own state of ataraxia. Through meditation, mindfulness, Nature and nurture I have been finding my way. How about yourself, how would you go about cultivating ataraxia for yourself?
Namaste ~ Ella
