Alpenglow is the rosy light of the setting or rising sun seen on high mountains. Alpenglow derives from a partial translation of the German Alpenglühen, which combines Alpen (Alps) and glühen (to glow). Alpenglow is also described as an optical phenomenon that appears as a horizontal reddish glow near the horizon opposite of the Sun when the solar disk is just below the horizon, and is easily viewed upon mountain peaks.
Alpenglow is that time right after or right before the golden hour, when the illumination is at it’s strongest along the horizon. Alpenglow is a magical, luminous, rosy light that hints at the radiance that shines in-between the brightness of day and the darkness of night. It may be a fleeting gleam of bold, vivid color, but Alpenglow touches upon the very essence of the divine.
The mighty peaks, awash with joy, the Alpenglow a regal cloak, luminous upon the grandeur of their prodigious slopes that withstood time and were witness to all that humankind had thus far wrought over land and selves…whatever else may come…~ Ella
Alpenglow is such a lovely word for such a breathtaking phenomenon, one I might add that I get to enjoy on the regular since I amid mountains, though Alps they are not! My charming mountains provide that pinkish red glow as the sun sets and it is quite magical! Have you ever witness Alpenglow?
