Word Nerd: Selenophilia

Word Nerd Header Apr 2016 via LaWhimsyselenophilia definition Word Nerd via LaWhimsySelenophilia is a love of the moon. Selenophilia derives from the words seleno- (moon) which comes from the Greek selēnē (moon) and philia (strong attraction to) which comes from the Greek philos (loving). So selenophilia is literally moon loving!

Selenophilia is a poetic word by nature, since the moon is a figure of poetry, worship and divine majesty. I consider myself to be a selenophile, which would be one who loves the moon. The words selenophilia and selenophile seem to hold the soothing, soft light the moon reflects down into the darkness of the night in them.

Selenophilia is such a gorgeous word and I feel the same thrill sharing it as I did when I first discovered it. Truly, finding words to help describe the most magical, mysterious and everyday delights this world holds is a form of wonderment that never dulls!
