There is no need to define or contain one’s self to a singular way of being…
“You are allowed to be both a masterpiece and a work in progress, simultaneously.”
As humans, we like to label things. We like neatly contained categories, with simple, clear definitions. All black and white, with no gray to be seen. Anything else is seen as a messy, overly complicated nuisance. Well, guess what? Life and everything involved with it – including each and every single human (no exceptions) – is a messy, overly complicated, gray-space taking, quirky, perplexing, undefinable nuisance and it’s actually an incredible wonderful thing!
Humans are meant to be a complicated, confusing, mixed-bag of temperaments, emotions, personalities, talents, issues and whatnot. And we are all meant to interact with each other. That’s how we learn. That’s how we grow. That’s how we take our human experience to new levels of understanding. That’s how we evolve.
It’s because of this we are allowed to be both a masterpiece and a work in progress simultaneously. We are born with everything we need to grow and thrive in this life, however, we must actively choose to tap into this awesome resource we have within us. We will each of us stumble, make mistakes, be complete and total screw-ups, but if we choose to use these as stepping stones and opportunities to learn and grow, then we are actually getting somewhere.
As an example, today I feel like such a major work in progress. I’m cranky, stressed out, exhausted, I keep making really stupid mistakes and I feel like any and every thing could set me off in a spiral of upset tears. Now I could use this as a way to label myself as worthless and nothing more than an anxiety riddled mess of a person (and believe me, I’ve done that plenty in my life), or I could use this time to be gentle with myself and to take the day one step, one action at a time and see what I can learn from it. I’m doing my best to do the latter, though it’s not easy and I’m not always successful. Reminding myself that one day, or even several days (hopefully not!), does not define me nor does it lessen the masterpiece that I already am. This is just adding more dimension and providing a chance to grow and learn more.
Each person in this world is both a masterpiece and a work in progress at the same time. If we pause and extend our compassion to ourselves and to each person we meet, we will learn, grow and make all of our masterpieces a bit grander and our works in progress a bit easier. And isn’t that what we each want? A little more understanding and kindness as we move through life? I know it’s what I desire and what I strive to share. How about you?
