Tannenbaum is a fir tree or Christmas tree. Tannenbaum is the German word for fir tree.
Tannenbaum is a rather obvious choice of word, I know, since O’ Tannenbaum is a fairly familiar song even to those who don’t celebrate Christmas. The modern lyrics of O’ Tannenbaum were written in 1824 by the German composer Ernst Anschütz. A fun fact is that though the song and word Tannenbaum are associated with Christmas, the lyrics do not ever refer to Christmas nor to a decorated tree. Instead O’ Tannenbaum is about the fir tree’s evergreen quality as a symbol of faithfulness and consistency. It’s also worth noting that of the top 5 most popular Christmas tree choices (according to the Farmer’s Almanac) the tannenbaum, or fir tree, is the top 3!
