Retrograde describes backwardness, or the appearance of backwardness, of one kind or another. Retrograde derives from the Latin term retrōgradī (to go backward) which in it’s turn derives from gradi (to walk, go). A more obsolete definition of retrograde has it meaning opposed or contrary, which actually works perfectly considering the backwards definition.
Most everyone knows the word retrograde from the usually “scary” idea of Mercury Retrograde. It’s something of a shame, since when Mercury goes retrograde it’s in appearance only. Despite seeming to move backwards, Mercury does not actually start moving retrograde in it’s orbit, it only appears so to those of us viewing it from our Earth vantage point. There is actually nothing to fear from this supposed “bad and backwards” time of retrograde. Actually, retrograde can be a very positive time since it highlights a time that can be used as contrary to the normal order of things and stepping out of the ordinary and slowing down a bit is a very great thing!
Do not fear Mercury Retrograde, embrace it and enjoy the choice to slow down and see things with a different, out of the normal, viewpoint!
Like I discuss in this lovely post, there is no need to resist or reject Mercury in Retrograde. Use it as a time to rest, reflect, reconnect, and review your life!
