Phantasmology, also known as Spectrology or Spookology, is the study of ghosts, phantoms, or apparitions. Another way of saying it is that Phantasmology is the study of such visions or other perceptions that have no physical or objective reality, or at least ones that cannot be readily explained. Phantasmology could be considered a part of the field of Parapsychology, or the study of the paranormal and supernatural.
Where Parapsychology deals with the investigation of paranormal and psychic phenomena, Phantasmology deals with the ghostly manifestations and dream type apparitions. There is overlap, naturally (or should I say supernaturally) but Phantasmology gets a bit more specific and is a specific and unique area of study. Phantasmology should not be confused with Spiritualism (which is a spiritual practice) nor should it be simply described as Paranormal investigation (too broad of description). Although truth be told, since Phantasmology is a field of study that goes beyond the known scientific world, it is difficult to accurately name or define.
While Phantasmology (and Parapsychology for that matter) is a year-round study, the Halloween/Autumnal season seems to drawn it out even more. Perhaps due to the death/thinning of the veils between realities/spookiness themes that are at the forefront? Hauntings and creepiness are at their most powerful in the collective consciousness, that’s for certain!
