Baisemain is an archaic French term for the traditional kissing of the hand that a vassal would give to the fief seigneur signifying respect. Baisemain then expanded it’s meaning to the polite manner which one would use to greet or leave a lady, especially a lady one wanted to impress or show admiration to. In many ways baisemain still applies in this day and age (though it doesn’t just have to be the guy doing it) since a kiss upon the hand can be a romantic, loving, passionate, sweet, etc, gesture. I mean, who doesn’t adore sharing in the many ways one can express their affection for another?!
My goodness, what burning desire can be expressed with baisemain!
While I find the word baisemain to be a bit clunky for everyday use, I do utterly and complete love what it means and sentiment behind it!
