“August rain: the best of the summer gone, and the new fall not yet born. The odd uneven time.” ~ Sylvia Plath
“August rain: the best of the summer gone, and the new fall not yet born. The odd uneven time.”
August is truly an odd uneven time. A time of extremes and excesses with the heat, humidity, and sun. A time between – when Summer is still hanging on but the end of it keeps whispering around the periphery. A time when thoughts of cooler temperatures and crispy edges start to beckon.
I am not a huge fan of summer, or to be more exact, summer weather. I fade and falter in the heat, the humidity, the sheer heaviness of the air. My brain gets addled, my body grows languid, my creativity stills as the harsh, burning sunlight stretches across the days and into the evenings.
I am a creature of twilight, of cooler temperatures, of skies made blue from a mix of sunlight warmth and crisp breezes. Give me pearly bright mornings, kissed cool and filled with a myriad of pastels. Show me nippy, darkening evening with skies ablaze with hot pinks, purples, and fiery reds. Lets me drink in air that is in turns soft, fresh, crisp and raw. August is none of these, and yet…
August is a gateway, a place in between. It is the twilight of Summer, both verdant in it’s humid showers and crisp in it’s drying underneath a bold sun. It is both stillness and motion, a promise fulfilled and a promise made. August shows off the fulfillment of summer riches and begins the hope of autumn wishes yet to be made. August is a time of reflection, of yearning, of quietude, and of slow meandering.
In between, odd uneven times are the times best filled with dreaming, with wishing, with simply allowing yourself to be and to let others be too. Let this August be one of sweetness wherever you can find or cultivate it. Let this odd uneven time be one of discovery, in and of yourself. Let August be what it needs to be and live with it in your way.
