Affirmation Mondays 348 ~ I would venture to guess that Anon, who wrote so many poems without signing them, was often a woman…

I would venture to guess that Anon...was often a woman. Virginia Woolf quote Affirmation Mondays 348 via LaWhimsyI would venture to guess that Anon, who wrote so many poems without signing them, was often a woman.” ~ Virginia Woolf

How many of the Anonymous contributors to so much throughout history were women…

I would venture to guess that Anon, who wrote so many poems without signing them, was often a woman.”

Since time began humans have sought out ways to contribute, to be remembered. Yet, how often is it that only Men seem to be discussed in the teaching of history, of science, of literature, medicine, etc?

Taking what is taught in schools only at face value, one would think that only white men have had anything to do with the history of, well, anything and everything. And that could not be further from the real truth.

So very many individuals have contributed in a multitude of ways, and at least half of them were Women (this is completely oversimplifying by using only two gender qualifiers).

How often has the anonymous who is quoted or who is attributed with something been a Woman? How many individuals who contribution affected, and still affects, lives been a Woman? I would bet more often than anyone would actually think.

We have all been a part of a male-centric (and usually a white male-centric) narration for so long that we have no real notion or idea of what any other narration could be.

Women have been adding to the narrative the entire time, yet they have had to find ways that could fit into it and anonymous was often the safest way.

There have been efforts to uncover who these anonymous (and not so anonymous, just glossed over) women were, and it’s been incredible. To see the past be fleshed out with a variety of names, ages, genders, and races – just like our present is – reminds us all how far we’ve come and how much further we need to go to bring equality to the forefront for everyone.

Let us all keep digging, keep researching, keep discovering just who anonymous was. And let us all keep raising each other up to stand, united, and unafraid to put our names to history in our own ways.
