“Talking about our problems is our greatest addiction. Break the habit. Talk about your joys.” ~ Rita Schiano
Sharing your joys is the new black…
“Talking about our problems is our greatest addiction. Break the habit. Talk about your joys.”
Complaining is oh, so easy to do. I mean most of us do it without a second thought. How often do you find yourself chatting with someone and the conversation is usually a bitch session? I bet even the most innocuous discussions tend to be based around mild complaints.
It’s become our human habit. It’s how we have learned to relate with others – through our grievances and troubles. Somewhere along the way we/society/whatever decided that complaining or having reasons to grouse about made us seem humble and relatable. If one shares joys and delights and achievements, well, that’s being boastful and conceited and shallow.
Quite frankly it’s a load of bullshit.
It’s beyond time to break the habit of complaining and lamenting and start sharing what we find joyful and satisfying and gratifying. By giving voice to the things and people we find delight and elation with, we magnify their powers and pass some of that joy along.
Instead of giving power and strength to the negative, we can actively choose to give it to what uplifts and provides merriment and delight. In fact, those things have just as much depth and profoundness and intensity as the more negative ones do. It’s just that the currant popular narrative doesn’t acknowledge this as the truth it is.
Happiness does not not equal shallowness. Complaining does not equal intelligence. Joy does not equal simplicity. Lamenting does not equal depth. Satisfaction does not equal ignorance. Grumbling does not equal wisdom. Merriment does not equal absurdity.
It’s all about balance and for far too long the scales have been tipped to heavily toward the negative. By bringing it back to center we can find our equilibrium once again and one way to start is by breaking the habit of complaining. There are times and places for active complaining and grumbling but as just a matter of course – not so much.
By actively choosing to share your joys and to see them as every bit as powerful as a complaint, you are switching up the common patterns of discourse and creating a new standard. One that chooses gratitude and love and warmth to share. How incredible is that?!
