“Only the government would believe that you could cut a foot off the top of a blanket, sew it to the bottom, and have a longer blanket.” ~ Unknown Native American
Time change is truly the bane of my existence…
“Only the government would believe that you could cut a foot off the top of a blanket, sew it to the bottom, and have a longer blanket.”
Since as far back as I can remember, time-change has seemed like the most inane, back-asswards practice that served little to no practical purpose.
Sure, there was some sense from a capitalistic point-of-view, since there have been studies that show that if there is sun-light later in the day people were more-likely to go out and spend money. In this internet shopping era, however, that seems like a specious reason at best.
Oh, and, yes, of course, there is something to be said about the sun not setting before what feels like 4pm, however, if the trade off means that the sun doesn’t rise until after 8am, well…
The part that really, really, really gets my goat is the idea that some how, some way, Daylight savings time makes the days longer…like what?!? All that Daylight savings time does is fall at the time of year when the days are naturally getting longer. I mean the Spring Solstice is all about how day and night are at equal time and then the days begin to run longer – no time change fiddling needed.
Nature works in a cycle, and that cycle naturally makes Winter nights long and Winter days short, just as it makes Summer nights short and Summer days long. Time – clock time – is based upon the cycle of the sun, after all, and that cycle follows Nature and the turn of the seasons, the orbit of the Earth around the Sun, etc.
Add to this the notion that practically everyone is running a sleep deficiency and the lack of decent sleep hygiene and steady circadian rhythms, and time change seems almost cruel!
I am truly hoping that we will be able to do away with the practice of time change, however, I just don’t know if keeping at Daylight savings time is the best idea, since it will mean dark, long Winter mornings that will still be coupled with earlier than anyone would like Winter sun-sets. Who knows, though, time is human made and human adapted to after all…
