“Autumn shows us how beautiful it is to let things go.” ~ Unknown
Autumn is a time of change, of a rich sort of ripening that quickly turns and fades. Nature seems to burst at the seams with rich, fiery colors that delight all the senses and then just as suddenly as the colors appeared they disappear and a stark barrenness takes hold. But Oh, how glorious, how utterly divine the Autumn is when it’s at it’s fullness. It’s in that time that Autumn shows us how beautiful it is to let things go.
Humans seem to have an almost instinctive nature to hold on to things, people, ideas, ideals, etc…almost as if they are scared of change and what letting go may mean. By holding on tightly and refusing to release they somehow think it means they are exerting control, exercising their power. In reality it’s the exact opposite. By not letting things go, they weaken themselves and the power they have over themselves (for that is the only, and best, power we each of us really have).
I have discovered that by refusing to let go, I dig myself into this small sort of rut and I limit all of the possibilities that life can provide. Instead of growing, learning, changing, I stay stuck in that rut, repeating the same things over and over and over. And the worst part is that those things I’m repeating, that rut I’ve created, is that there is nothing about them that brings about joy, or wonder, or helps others, or even myself. It’s simply a dull, usually negative pretending to be safe, rut. It’s awful.
But, there is a way out of that rut of holding on and Autumn shows us the way. In the Fall Nature must let go. It has to let go of it’s leaves, of the warmth, of blooming and growing so that it can retreat and reset and ready it’s self for the next Spring when it will burst forth again. Nature doesn’t mind letting go and finds no sorrow or upset in it, instead it rejoices with a bright, beautiful show of color and it trusts that after Winter, Spring will come again.
The very same is true for each of us. By letting go of things we no longer need, ideals that no longer work, people who are hurting us, thoughts that are bringing us down, ways of living that are harming not healing we are trusting that good things will come, better times will arrive, Spring will bloom again. By holding on we are living in fear of not having, being or doing enough. But there is no need for that because there will always be enough so long as you trust. You were made for a reason. You are You for a purpose. By letting go of what isn’t working for you, you’ll be able to find what does. But you have to let go first.
Let Autumn be a guide and let go of whatever you’ve been holding onto with peace, love and joy. If you really need something it will come or even come back. Just let go and rejoice in the beauty of it. It will always, always be okay. Just like you will be. Let go.
