“If the sight of the blue skies fills you with joy, if a blade of grass springing up in the fields has power to move you, if the simple things of nature have a message that you understand, rejoice, for your soul is alive.” ~ Eleonora Duse
This morning was one of those ideal mornings, the kind that greets you with a gentle coolness and a soft dampness in the fresh misty air, the sky clear blue past the sunrise hues of pink and violet, touched here and there with puffy wisps of white cloud. The cheerful bird songs float about and the subtle scents of Spring are hinted at amidst the wet ground and almost budding plants. It might only be the middle of February, but it’s there, that promise of a verdant, revived Earth awakening after it’s deep Winter’s sleep. It’s mornings like this that put this quote from Duse in my mind…
“If the sight of the blue skies fills you with joy, if a blade of grass springing up in the fields has power to move you, if the simple things of nature have a message that you understand, rejoice, for your soul is alive.“
Nature has so many messages, so many meanings and layers that I cannot help but be moved by it no matter the time or place I’m in. To pause and drink in whatever bits of Nature are at hand is both a decadent and necessary part of living, at least it is for me. Without that connection to the vibrant, living World I feel at a loss, though luckily it is not a loss that I have to suffer from often.
The connection I feel to the Earth does make my soul feel alive and rejuvenated in such profound yet simple ways. To smell the arid dust of the desert, the petrichor after a rainfall, to hear the rushing sounds of a flowing river or the rustle of leaves in a breeze, to feel the air flowing over my skin as I run and the way flower petals and branches brush against me, seeing all the vibrant colors of a sunrise or sunset, tasting the sharp flavors of freshly picked herbs, sensing and feeling the vibrations of all the living, growing things as they surround me. I am harmoniously engaged and alive when I am in the sensory delights of Nature.
Does the sight of the vast blue sky touched with soft white clouds fill you with delight? Does a blade of grass waving in a field make your soul sing out? Does the sight of a flower growing in the cracks of a road make you smile? Does the very thought of a simple sunset glowing out move you at the wondrous beauty of it? Are there moments when you’re in or witnessing Nature and your soul feels like it could almost burst out of your chest from the majesty, the joy, that you are feeling? If so then rejoice, for your soul is alive. Cherish it. Nurture it. Love it and feed it. Keep it alive and wondrous. Rejoice!
