Every year on February 2nd, we rely on a groundhog to predict whether there are 6 more weeks of Winter in or 6 weeks of more Spring-like weather. Of course, there are actually about 6 weeks from that date left until the Spring Equinox, however, tradition holds that should the groundhog see his shadow on this day, it shall be 6 more weeks of quite Wintry weather.
With this in mind, I felt that this dear proverb was quite fitting…
“No matter how long the Winter, Spring is sure to follow”
Winter can come into our lives in so many forms, be it an actual season, or a state of mind/being. It’s a seemingly fallow time, one of inward workings, hibernation, reflection, soul-tending. It can be lonely, bleak, quiet…and yet, no matter how much it may feel like it’s a permanent state, Spring, in all it’s magnificent, bursting forth renewal will always arrive.
It’s this promise, this hope, that the warm, sunny times will return that keeps us warm and going in these wintry times. How else could we appreciate them if not for the darkness, the cold? Nothing is forever, not even what may feel like an eternal winter. Spring will follow and bright, eager, lush times will too!
Instead of focusing on the idea of 6 more weeks of cold, bitter weather, I’m going to focus on the idea that below the surface life is now beginning to stir and slowly creeping toward the surface where it will break out and unleash it’s new life force – for today is also Imbolc, a celebration of the promise of spring, new life, hope, and rebirth.
Stop for a moment today, really look at the world around you and take notice of all of the small changes that are occurring. It’s truly glorious!
