“We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act but a habit.” ~ Aristotle
Habits make the creature, the creature makes habits and each and every one of us is a creature of habit. By this logic, what Aristotle said makes perfect, obvious sense.
We, each of us, are what we repeatedly do, what we repeatedly say, what we repeatedly believe and live. That is our life, our power, our control.
Excellence, positivity, joy, then, are not mere acts but habits. Habits we cultivate, repeat, and live.
What this means is that we get to choose, to create how we interact and exist within our realities. If you decide to indulge in the pessimistic, the dismal, the hopeless and hateful, well then that is the habit, the life that you will repeat and live. If, on the other hand, you choose to embrace the optimistic, enrich your mind and soul with gratitude and focus on the kindness that you are capable of, you are creating a habit and a life of excellence.
Written out like this it seems so obvious, so simple a choice and even an action, however if you already have an ingrained habit of the pessimistic, you can get tripped up. That’s perfectly alright. For some reason the prevailing attitude does seem to bend toward the lower energies, the kind that bring hate and hopelessness front and center. It doesn’t have to be that way. You don’t have to keep repeating those habits, those cycles.
It may seem difficult or maybe impossible at first, but with a bit of perseverance those old, needless habits will fall away and be replaced with something so much better. Like breaking any bad habit, give yourself time and patience.
Start with one week, one day, and begin to create your own habit of excellence. Before you know it you’ll be living a life filled with loving, kind, optimistic habits that will make your life all the more brilliant and, yes, excellent!
