“Any new beginning is forged from the shards of the past, not from the abandonment of the past.” ~ Craig D. Lounsbrough
And so the circle turns once more, another year, another day, as we step forward…
“Any new beginning is forged from the shards of the past, not from the abandonment of the past.”
Happy New Year and welcome to 2022! I am so here for the end of last year and the beginning of this one. Yes, it may be simply a symbolic date, a human created idea of time and space and value, yet I do treasure it’s very symbolism and the promise it holds for a fresh start.
That said, this fresh start is not the same thing as a clean slate. A clean slate would mean wiping away everything from the past and that would also mean losing the memories, the lessons, the difficulties overcome, the life already lived. I treasure these things.
My experiences and memories, the good, the bad, the melancholy, the bittersweet, and the beautiful – these are what have made, and still make, me who I am and who I am becoming. I would not trade these for anything.
I say this coming off of a few very difficult years (I think we’ve all felt this in one way or another). Am I glad these years are now over – YES. Oh a million times yes! Do I expect that all the troubles and hardships are over with, no, not really. I mean we as a collective are still dealing with a pandemic, corrupt governments, broken systems, etc and so forth. Personally, too, I am still dealing with the fallout of loss and grief and lost time and self.
Rawness has become a known companion, but so too has hope. I see this new year as a promise to myself. A promise to keep going, to growing and stretching and reaching and creating. I’ve been forged by life thus far and I have come out brighter and lighter and stronger than ever. This year is about building up with the shards of the past, with the lessons learned. It’s about expanding with love – starting with myself – and choosing with optimism (not toxic positivity) and discovering life on new terms. It’s about throwing off societal expectations and finding a way past the corruptions and old ways.
All of us have it in us to go forward and not stay stuck. We are at a cross-roads with so much and it can be overwhelming and bizarre and frightening, however it can be hopeful and exciting and worthwhile too. It’s going to take time and effort and dealing with a ton of bullshit, but there will be beauty and wonder and grand things about as well. It’s on us to seek them out and create them and share them.
Let’s have 2022 be a year to bloom and to forge a future that includes the shards of the past – no more forgetting what came before, lets embrace it and learn from it and change from it for the betterment of ourselves and each other. If you start with you, you’ll be amazed at what you can do!
