This line from Mary Oliver’s poem Mindful seems to be a part of my soul…
“Everyday I see or hear something that more or less kills me with delight, that leaves me like a needle in the haystack of light.“
I added the rest of the line from the poem above simply because it’s truly beautiful, though even the part I used for this Monday Mantra is perfect on it’s own. How often each day do you get struck with something delightful? Once, twice, or maybe not at all? Why is that, do you ever wonder?
For me, I live for each of those mundane, yet utterly charming or lovely or awe-inspiring moments of the divine. The way the sun molts dance and bob about in the sunlight that shines through the window panes just so. The soft way the curtains move when a slight breeze sighs into a room. The gentle purrs of the cats as they doze in pure contentment. The way that rain drops hang off of the winter bare tree branches, like so many diamonds. The homey scent of rising bread dough, yeasty and full of promise.
Each day holds moments like these and more, and each of these moments has the ability to make my soul ache with the delight and beauty each has in it’s own way. It’s those times when a sunset can make me catch my breathe with the sheer gorgeous wonder of it, or when I feel such a tender, all-consuming joy for the life that I am in as I see and take part in it’s moments.
I have returned to Mary Oliver’s words again and again (like with this) for guidance, for inspiration and for solace. She touches a part of me that I adore and that I cultivate even in difficult times. These are the moments, the pieces of life that we are alive for and that make everything make sense. These are the moments of love, of peace, of Nature and of nurture.
When things get overwhelming or difficult, take the time to really look at your life and the life around you and see and hear those things that more or less kill you with delight. They are there and they are why you keep going and they are the reasons to love your life. The same goes for when things are easy and wonderful – see those things and rejoice and know that they are always, always there for your soul’s delight. You are that divine needle in a haystack of light and you always will be!
