Monday Mantra 107 – It’s not where you take things from – it’s where you take them to.

It’s not where you take things from - it’s where you take them to. Jean-Luc Godard quote Monday Mantra 107 via LaWhimsy“It’s not where you take things from ~ it’s where you take them to.”~ Jean-Luc Godard

Nothing is original – it’s all been done before. How many times have you heard this bandied about? I mean, certainly it’s true – nothing is original, in so much that every idea has a universal existence that precedes all known history. Knowing this can be daunting, because how do you take the inspiration that you had, the idea that is new, novel, and original to you and make it unique if, in a certain sense, it’s not original or new? Well, here’s the rather nifty trick to it – the idea may not be original, but YOU ARE! Your inspiration, your especial views, your individual take on things is unique. Because you are an original, one-of-a-kind, that means you do have something distinctive to add to that which isn’t new. It’s what Jean-Luc Godard was getting at with “It’s not where you take things from ~ it’s where you take them to.”. If you take something in your direction, well then you are creating something new and different. Even if it seems as though it’s been done a million times before, because you haven’t done your thing to it yet, that means there is still an avenue of discovery, of creation, and of your own, personal distinction. Amazing, isn’t it?!
