“Winter is the time for comfort, for good food and warmth, for the touch of a friendly hand and for a talk beside the fire: It is the time for home.” ~ Edith Sitwell
Winter has officially arrived here in the Northern Hemisphere, since it it the time of the Winter Solstice. Winter is a season of cold, quiet, and deliciously cozy introspection. A time for curling up with furry animals, cuddly blankets, mugs full of warm drinks, books to read, thoughts to think, conversations to share, and goodness knows what else. It’s a time of hygge, of darkness and of dreaming.
When you have to venture out from your snug dwelling (by choice or by need), you get wind-pinked cheeks, lungs filled with sharp, brisk air, wood-smoke smells, and a land that is outlined with sharp silhouettes as it slumbers deep below. The sky may be dark, broody, heavy with clouds and shades of gray. Other times it is a crisp, clear blue with a bright, watery sun and gauzy billows of clouds and breath and white smoke.
I love the peace that dwells in this season – a season, as Edith Sitwell says so well, of comfort, good food and warmth, of friendly touches, and for home.
