We could all use a gentle reminder…

“You are not a mess. You are a feeling person in a messy world.”

Stop and think about that for a second. “You are not a mess.” – this is something I think too many of us have been told since we were little. Told to the point that we’ve internalized it as the truth. As our own truth. That is awful. To think and believe that we are a mess. That how we feel, how we think, how we express, and how we act is messy and something we should be ashamed, embarrassed, and discomforted by. Why? Feelings are natural and you and I are not a mess for having, feeling, and expressing them.

No, you and I are feeling people who exist in a messy world. It is not us who are the mess, it is actually the world. And no, this is not a case of it’s the world that is the problem, not me. By pointing out the fact that the world is messy we are reminding ourselves that it is often chaotic, topsy-turvey, unsettled and there are many, many misunderstandings, grievances, catastrophes, etc. And because of this, we, as conscious, receptive, emotional people who exist in and of world, often respond in kind with our feelings and emotions.

Why should we internalize the problems and have ourselves and reactions be the cause of them, when really, they are simply one small effect of them? By being feeling people, we can ache for the world and those feelings can motivate us to do better by and for the world and ourselves.

Don’t deny your feelings or belittle them by labeling them, and in-turn yourself, as messy. They are feelings caused by a messy world. Are they uncomfortable, chaotic, even turbulent at times? Certainly. But that doesn’t make you messy. It simply makes you human. Embrace it, feel it, accept yourself and your feelings, and then embrace the messy world and do all that you can to make it a gentler, kinder place.
