Life is filled with storms of all kinds, but we were made to weather them…

“Don’t try to calm the storm. Calm yourself. The storm will pass.”

Wow. Are we ever in the midst of a storm right now. A storm of such magnitude that it is literally encompassing the entire world. It’s been scary, chaotic, confusing, bewildering, and utterly life-altering for all of us in one way or another, to say the very least.

You know what, though? We don’t have to calm this storm. Our number one job right now is to calm ourselves.

It’s not easy, what with the dearth of clear leadership here in the US, and the lack of clear and concise information beyond wash your hands and isolate (okay, practice social distancing does sound kinder and less, well, isolating). However, it can and must be done.

By calming yourself and tending to yourself kindly, you will be better able to provide calm for others. By creating and cultivating a more serene mind-space and practicing soothing actions, you are helping add peace to the collective.

Each day there are multiple chances to encourage your own calm. Simply taking some time to pay attention to your breath or to the sounds around you can center you. A little more sleep or a minute or two to simply just be can work wonders for your calm. Use this time to nourish yourself in mental, physical and spiritual ways and you’ll be finding your calm.

Take the time to smile at everyone you see when you have to go out – we might have to be physically distant, but you can still spread happiness and kindness. Be patient as you adjust to your new current “normal” and remember everyone else is doing the same.

This storm will pass. They always do. And yes, another storm will not doubt arise, but you can weather that one too. It’ll be easier if you begin to cultivate and nourish your calm now and use your calmness to help bolster others.

You don’t have to calm this storm. Simply calm yourself. We’ve got this and we’ll be okay.
