Affirmation Mondays 251 – I wonder how much of what weighs me down is not mine to carry

How much of what you think, what you feel, is truly your own…

“I wonder how much of what weighs me down is not mine to carry.”

It’s human nature to be weighed down with thoughts and feelings. Society, at least, makes us feel that this is so. That heavy, lingering feelings, usually of a negative, self-defeating nature, are, well, natural.

They are not.

It’s almost a bit shocking to think that, though, that feeling weighed down about so much is not actually natural or has to be normal. I can barely wrap my own mind around this concept, to be honest.

So many of us are carting around entire mountains of problems, issues and challenges that are not actually ours to carry. There are problems that must be solved, struggles that need to be resolved, hurts that should be soothed, but then they must be moved on from and not carried with.

Added to this is the weight of things that are not ours to even carry. The guilt others would thrust upon us for so many a reason, the faults that would be laid at out feet to pick up, the slack of emotional baggage that does not belong to us. It’s difficult at best.

I have carried around my own extra weights from the unnecessary guilt I attached to simply existing, to the faults I allowed others to pin to me when I had done nothing wrong, to the burdens I falsely decided to attribute to myself. It was, and still can be,  messy. Yet by pausing and evaluating all that I have been carrying with me, I have been able to start identifying the things that are not mine and letting them go.

By releasing all that is not mine, I’ve also started to see what I have been placing upon others (though they haven’t always carried them with them – a valuable example to be sure). It’s a give and take, though one that I tend to do on my own since I am only in control of my own actions and choices.

I am doing my best to create a healthy balance in myself and my life and a major way of doing this is by releasing all that is not mine to carry. By freeing myself in this way I am better able to focus my energies upon that which is mine and to make that the best I can. When I do this, I heal better, learn more, and am open in a greater manner.

What are you carrying that weighs you down, and how much of it doesn’t actually belong to you?
