You are your harshest critic but guess what…
“You’re doing better than you think you are.“
It is so easy to judge and to find yourself lacking in practically everything. To tell yourself that you’re not doing enough. You’re not good enough. You’re not changing, you’re lacking, you’re failing or falling behind. To tear yourself down to nothing. To bully and belittle yourself. But it’s far from what is real, from what the actual truth is. The gentle, kind reality that you’re doing better than you think you are, than you’re giving yourself credit for.
I totally get it and I know from experience that I can be my own worst bully. But the things I tell myself and convince myself are the truth are merely me being mean and down-right cruel. I would never treat another person the way I treat myself at my worst. I simply wouldn’t. And yet, I still find myself falling into the habit of undervaluing and demeaning myself for so much. It’s truly mortifying to admit to, but I want to share so that maybe others who do the same won’t feel so alone and that maybe, just maybe, they’ll really take this message to heart.
We are all doing so much better than we are giving ourselves credit for. We need to be kinder, gentler, easier on ourselves. We deserve the same kind of generosity and goodwill that we extend to others. We are each of us worthy of goodness, of love, of tenderness, of sympathy and tolerance exactly as we are, right here, right now. And the best way to begin to receive it, is to give it to ourselves first.
Life can be hard and cruel, but that is no reason why we should be that way, especially toward ourselves. We are not meant to be perfect, far from it, in fact. But we are meant to love and be loved, to embrace and be embraced, to be open-hearted and to just to and be the best we can be, one day, one step at a time. I’m doing the best I can and I’m doing better than I’m giving myself credit for – and You, too, are doing so much better than you think you are. Be kind to yourself, you are worthy and you deserve it!
