Everyone finds themselves in the place of not knowing what to do. Whether it’s because of self-doubt, or a fear of making the wrong choice, or simply because of the chaotic noise that comes from within or without, it just happens. And when it does it can make one feel almost trapped, panicked.
Sometimes there are too many options, other times it seems as if there are none, and sometimes it can feel like a damned if you do, damned if you don’t situation. You know exactly what I’m talking about. In those times, the very best thing you can do can so easily be overlooked.
You have to stop, become still, and breathe. You have to remove yourself from the situation for a moment or two, remove your emotions, and let a stillness settle in.
By doing this, by pausing if even for a few seconds, you will be able to listen. The listening allows you to shift through the chaos, through the emotional baggage and all the accompanying doubt, to the heart of what is at hand. As you sit in the stillness and listen with your being you may just hear exactly what you need to hear to make it through this moment, this choice.
As Carl Sandburg said so succinctly, ““Yesterday is done. Tomorrow never comes. Today is here. If you don’t know what to do, sit still and listen. You may hear something.”.
This is true wisdom and yes, it may be much, much easier to read than to apply (believe me, I know) but it is worth it. Sitting still and listening always leads to something positive and helpful, even if it’s just reminding you to breathe. And besides you may just hear something.
