“When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, “Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.” “~ Mister Rogers
This isn’t the quote I wanted to use today. In fact this is a quote that, while it has provided much comfort over the years, I wish it didn’t have to. Truth is, this world can be an incredibly scary, sad, unnerving, sickening place. This world can also be a glorious, neighborly, loving, kind place too. Tragedies may happen, the ugly may show, but if you look for humanity, for the pureness of the human heart that shows up and helps when that happens, you see the the other side. The worst of humanity more often than not brings forth the very best of humanity. Mister Rogers’ words (and his lovely Mother’s) are a soothing, comforting balm as well as a call to action. A call to bring forth your best and to be a helper – even if only in the smallest of ways. The light of the world can overshadow the dark if we help each other. My heart goes out to each and every soul affected by this weekends tragedy and to all those who have been affected by any tragedy. Let us look for the helpers as we help and heal.
