I remember someone once telling me that they expected nothing so that when bad things happened they weren’t disappointed. I was so shocked, and I’ll admit disgusted, at this sort of mindset. I mean, really? I can understand the idea behind living a life where having expectations is not the main focus (that’s a driving force behind living in and for the moment – you are focused on now and not expecting anything, just experiencing everything in the present.) However, the mindset that bad things will happen so why bother to set yourself up for disappointment is beyond me (and isn’t that expecting the bad to happen anyway?). I much prefer the “Expect nothing. Appreciate everything.” mentality. I would rather appreciate what I have and joyfully anticipate what may come, rather than expect a specific outcome (good or bad). What do you think? Is the idea of living a life of appreciation and anticipation preferred to one of expectations (whether one realizes it or not)?
