Word Nerd: Pervicacious

pervicacious definition Word Nerd via LaWhimsyPervicacious means extremely willful, obstinate, or stubborn. Pervicacious derives from the Latin pervicac- (which derives from pervicax (from per- (thoroughly) and vicax, from the stem of vincere (to prevail, win a point, conquer)) and the English -ious. Pervicacious was first used around 1625-1635.

Pervicacious has the variants of pervicaciously (adverb) and pervicaciousness (noun). Someone who is pervicacious is incredibly inflexible and self-willed, for example, “He was pervicacious in His opinion that the mysteries of outer space were far superior to the mysteries of the ocean floor.”

Pervicaciousness has truly pervaded so much of social media. I mean, having an open mind that is willing to listen to various facts and opinions before forming a solid, yet still somewhat flexible, viewpoint of one’s own is all but extinct. It’s truly inane, especially when the pervicaciousness is steeped in falsehoods, chosen ignorance, and hatred. At least pervicacious is another word to help describe it *shrugs*. Do you feel pervicacious in any way or know those who are?
