Monday Mantra 227 – In the end I would rather be able to say I loved too much than not enough

Life is all about love and love is all about life…

In the end I would rather be able to say I loved too much than not enough.

This quote is the absolutely gorgeous truth. It simply is. To love and be loved and at the end of your life to be able to say that you loved too much is the ultimate ideal goal.

Now, most would say that all of this love should be project and sent outward to others. That you should flood the world and all that you meet with a bountiful, overabundance of love. That you should give your love as freely as the air you breathe. To do just that is divine – and it is.

However, that is not the only way one should love too much.

The other way is to send your boundless, gracious, tender love inward to yourself. You should bathe your entire being in your love. You need to be able to say in the end that you loved yourself too much as well. Without turning your love to yourself, you are only half loving. No matter how much love you send out, if you aren’t providing it for yourself too, you are only sharing a small portion of the great love you are truly capable of.

Think about it, in order to share, you must be taking part, no? So to share your love with those around you, you must be loving yourself as well. Is it not “Love thy neighbor as thyself.”? That means you love your neighbor as you love yourself – not instead of or better than you love yourself. The self-love is an implied must.

RuPaul updated it as “If you can’t love yourself, how in the hell are you gonna love anyone else?” and it is a golden truth. You need to foster and nurture love for yourself in order to be able to fully and freely share it with others. If self-hate and loathing get in the way, your love is dimmed. It’s not bad or gone or anything like that, it’s just that the love you are sharing isn’t as strong and deep as it could be. And who doesn’t want to be at their best or sharing their greatest?

When you have people, animals, etc. in your life that you love, you want to give them the best of everything. You would do or say or provide any and everything they could want or need or desire. You want then to feel cherished, cared for, loved. You are a part of the equation too. You also deserve all the goodness and delights that you would shower upon those you adore and love. And it is actually paramount that you provide the same feelings of comfort, caring, tenderness, and love for yourself that you would for others.

By choosing to love yourself, you are choosing to cultivate a boundless, powerful, never-ending love that will spill out and multiply in untold ways. By deciding and acting on the idea that in the end you would rather be able to say that you loved too much than not enough, you are choosing to love yourself too much too – and that is pure magic. You deserve love, and you deserve to love yourself as much as you love those who mean the most to you. Love too much rather than not enough and you’ll have few if any regrets.
